The Tarxien Scout Group is a group of young people interested in scouting activities and like to have a challenge. The Group is situated in Tarxien, a small town in the south of the Mediterranean island of Malta. The Group was founded in 1988 and makes part of the global Scouts founded by Lord Baden-Powell in Brownsea Island in Britain in 1907.
The Group is split into three sections, each with their own leaders. Firstly, there are the Cub Scouts. These are young scouts between the age of 7 and 11. They have activities like visits to national parks, educational activities and hikes.
Then come the Scouts, or the Troop. This is the section for those aged 11 to 15. This section has a slightly broader choice of activities as their members are slightly more mature. They have activities like longer and overnight hikes, frequent sleepovers, BBQs in the summer, a longer summer camp and national competitions where they test their knowledge on scouting skills against other groups from across the island.
Lastly, there are the Ventures, or the Unit. This is the section for those aged 15 to 18, and is the last step before becoming a leader. A lot of responsibility and cooperation is expected from the members of this section as they are seen as role models to the rest of the members of the younger parts of the group. They have riskier activities like multi-day journeys, rock climbing, multi-day camps on their own and also joint activities with other Units are more frequent than other sections as the members are more able to delegate work between themselves without the need of their leader. Also, the Unit also do a some community work, both inside and outside the Group. The Unit goes out to elderly homes and helps in council work outside the Group. Also, members of the Unit help in the running of the Group's Store and help out with other sections' weekly meetings.
So, that is the structure of our Group. Also helping are the Council which help in the day-to-day running of the Group comprised mainly of parents of the members, and other helpers which help during special activities.
