Feminist critiques of the ‘Girl Effect’ have argued that representations of girlhood too often rely on the ‘monolithic representation of a “Third World girl” who is constrained, uneducated, and poor’ (Sensoy & Marshall, 2010, p. 300), thus reinforcing the binary between ‘empowered girls in the West and those in need of saving in the East’ (Sensoy & Marshall, 2010, p. 301
